Chairman Authority Speech

The journey of the Petroleum Exploration and Production Authority (PEPA) is full of many distinguished works that it has implemented in all fields of oil and gas from its establishment until now, in a constant effort by its employees to place the Republic of Yemen among the ranks of the world’s petroleum countries. The Authority possesses accumulated technical and economic expertise, which has made it the Yemeni nation’s petroleum hand, which has always sought to extract petroleum resources and exploit them in a way that contributes to the development of the country’s national economy in light of the national vision for building the state. The Authority will be an effective institution that supports the advancement of national economic indicators, which will be achieved with the help of its Yemeni people.

 

PEPA is carrying out its tasks and duties through a technical, administrative and specialized team working within its framework. The main tasks and duties of the Yemen PEPA include:

  • - Implementing, carrying out and follow-up programs to monitor the performance of the International Oil Companies (IOCs) working in Yemen.
  • - Receiving, collecting and filing different data and information of the technical activities of the exploration and production stages.
  • - Participating in the evaluation of the geological, geophysical studies and geochemical analysis of the sedimentary basins in Yemen as well as preparation of economic and technical studies for the oil and gas reserves.
  • - Continuously supervise the operation on the strict adherence to the rules and regulations of the environment in collaboration with the related parties.

PEPA was established in 1990 to act on behave of the MOM countrywide for effective supervision and monitoring of the 115 Petroleum Blocks on which 47 of them are currently active in exploring and producing by 3 National Companies and 9 International Companies under the Production Sharing Agreement (PSAs).

 

The first commercial discovery of oil was in 1984 at Alif field (block 18) by Yemen Hunt Company (currently - Safer Exploration And Production Operations Company) and production started in1986. Canadian Nexen Petroleum discovered the major oil reserves in 1991 in the Masila area (block 14).

Currently, the Oil production in Yemen is around 135,000 bbl/d and split between eleven operators: Safer, PetroMasila, Jannah Hunt, OMV, Calvally, DNO, and Occidental.

Oil in place estimated 10.95 Billion BBL and the Natural gas in place estimated is 18.2 tcf. The majority of country’s gas reserves are concentrated in the Marib-Al-Jawf Basin.

 

Currently, there are three pipelines in Yemen namely, Marib-Ras Isa 24-26 inches pipeline, Shabw-Rudhuma 20-inch Pipeline and Masila-AshShihr 24-inch Pipeline.
